Get Off Autopilot
Create Your Life, Your Way Series
Hello all, I’m Kayla Snellenberger and excited to partner with Unlocked as a guest blogger for the upcoming four-part series, Create Your Life, Your Way.
Raise your hand if life’s felt like a never ending race track. You’re always running, never knowing where you’re going, or if you’ll get off. It’s exhausting. We know our best chance at happiness is to get off the track, but we’re too afraid of not knowing what’s beyond it.
What if it’s not life dragging us in circles? What if it’s the walls we built around ourselves? There’s a purpose for you far greater than what fear wants you to believe. Fear wants you to think it’s scary. It doesn’t want you to know the joy that’s beyond the track.
You’re not a passenger stuck on the ride. You’re the one with the keys and roadmap. Fear no longer controls you when you lean into it and walk through it. It’s scary as hell. It always will be, but use it to fuel you, not limit you. Change occurs with consistent, focused action.
Together we will uncover limiting beliefs holding you back and a step-by-step process for defining and creating your life your way. In the next four posts you’ll:
- Get off autopilot
- Debunk the beliefs holding you back
- Realign beliefs that empower you
- Set clear goals & remove the bull
Get Off Autopilot & Trust Yourself
You know that feeling you get when you have an unexpected moment of silence? The one you try to avoid by over scheduling your day, re-scanning your newsfeed, hating on someone else, or entertaining any habit that makes you forget about life for a while. The one you hide from because you know it’ll tell you the truth.
It tells you what brings you joy, what makes you happy, and what breaks your heart. It’s where the negative feelings, you were told you should never feel, exist.
We lock it up and try to pretend it isn’t there. It almost works, but you can’t run from it. It’s the core of your being, the compass of your soul, and without it you’re lost. It’s there to tell you something. Listen to it. It’s probably telling you to wake up.
Friend, it’s time to stop running from yourself. You’re not flawed, you’re not broken. You, just as you are, are enough. Just like our friend, Glinda the Good Witch said, “You’ve always had the power…you just have to learn it for yourself.”
Most days we’re on autopilot, reacting to situations in our lives without much thought. We react in ways that protect us from feeling any type of discomfort, whether masked as a busy schedule, anger, or hiding from the world. We constantly search for things outside ourselves, hoping for a sense of peace that can only be found within. Below are a few questions to begin turning inward instead of reacting out of habit.
Do the Work
Here’s what I want you to do for the next 14 days to start listening and trusting yourself more and turning to external things less.
During the Day
Notice when you impulsively try to distract yourself (re-scanning your newsfeed, searching Netflix, raiding the fridge, projecting hate onto someone else). Instead push the breaks, take a deep breath, and ask yourself,
1. What am I not acknowledging? Why?
2. What am I not allowing myself to feel? Why?
Pause, take a deep breathe, and just listen. This process may take two minutes, five minutes, or maybe even ten minutes, but each time it gets easier. Be open and watch for any quick judgements that creep in.
Grab a notebook or open the notes app on your phone. Reflect on your experiences from the day. Get honest with yourself.
1. What feelings were you avoiding or not acknowledging today?
2. What challenges presented themselves?
3. What can you learn from both the successes and challenges?
4. What is one step you will take to navigate those challenges tomorrow?
Celebrate it all. Write it out and reflect to prepare for the next day.
Tip: Writing daily, with no intent or expectation can help you become more reflective and keep it front of mind while creating a new habit.
Keep Yourself Accountable
Community is everything. I’m here to help! Let me know, what will be your cue you’re on autopilot instead of looking inward?
Share the Love
If you found this post helpful share it with your friends! We need our tribe to remind us that we’re already enough and far more capable than we sometimes allow ourselves to be.
In the next post, uncover your limiting beliefs and how they influence everyday decision making.
Alright, it’s time to get at it. You are ready. Let’s show ourselves some love one step at a time.
